Most of us were handed the Bible along with a set of instructions for how to read it — instructions that came from somewhere else. A tradition, a teacher, a method, a favorite author. Sometimes those instructions help. Often they quietly get in the way, until we’re reading the Bible on our terms, or someone else’s, instead of its own.

This site exists because I’ve become convinced of something simple and, I think, freeing: Scripture comes with its own way of being read. The Bible is not a pile of raw material waiting for us to supply the method. It shows us, on its own pages, how it is meant to be understood — how its own writers read what came before them, how meaning runs from the Author through the text to the reader, and how a word written long ago actually reaches the person holding it today. Learning to read it that way is not a technique reserved for scholars. It is available to anyone willing to let the text lead.

That conviction is what the name points at. A one-way sign doesn’t give you options; it tells you which way the road goes. Meaning in Scripture runs one direction — from God, who spoke, to us, who receive. We don’t build our way up to the text or bend it back toward ourselves. We follow where it already points.

Who’s behind it

I’m Jason Kruis. I’m a pastor, and I’ve spent years working in the area of biblical interpretation — how we get from the words on the page to a right understanding, and from a right understanding to a life lived before God. Much of what you’ll find here began in the ordinary work of preaching and teaching and sitting with people over open Bibles, and only later got worked out more carefully. I care most about the people this is finally for: the believer in the pew, the pastor in the study on Saturday night, my own children — anyone who wants to read the Bible with confidence that they’re hearing what God actually said, and not just what they brought to it.

I’m not selling anything here. Everything on this site is offered freely, and shared under a license that lets you copy and pass it along. If it helps you read the Bible more faithfully, it has done its job.

What you’ll find

The library is organized by topic. Under each one you’ll find writing — and, over time, talks, teaching, and other resources — aimed at helping you read a given part of Scripture, or a given question, the way it was written to be read. Some pieces are short and practical. Some go deeper. All of them are trying to do the same thing: get out of the way, and let the text point.
